Tis the Season for giving! The best time of year for expressing gratitude and spreading love is upon us! Every year, my family and I create handmade Christmas cards for the local Children’s Hospital and this year we decided to include some small gifts and candy with our cards. In addition to our gifts for the Children’s Hospital we are also participating in the Layer On Love initiative headed by Coca-Cola and Walmart.
If you’ve been to Walmart lately, you may have noticed the Layer on Love campaign with One Warm Coat; an organization whose mission is to provide those in need with a free warm coat. The mission this holiday season is to donate half a million coats to those in need!
So to kick off the season for giving, I set up our usual crafting Christmas party with a crafting station to embellish some mini gift bags and cute sweater tags to layer on the love and pay it forward!
Cozy Christmas Party Decor
You may have noticed that my theme for Christmas this year is rustic and plaids. I have always loved the rustic look and I’m so excited to see all the trending plaids! So of course, I had to continue the theme with our little crafting party. I started with some of my favorite woodsy garlands and decor pieces plus a few party items I picked up at Walmart. And of course, I had to pick up a couple of 2-liters of our favorite, Coca-Cola!
Starting with a plaid table runner, some wood cake plates and a bird cage with with ceramic red robins, I decked out the table. A coordinating banner was perfect for my backdrop and a lit pine cone garland for the table added to the rustic charm.
I added plaid ribbon to my garland to carry on the theme along with a set of skis embellished with greenery and more pine cones.
I can’t have a party without a few cupcakes, so I served some with paper tree toppers and cute gingerbread wrappers.
We snacked on popcorn that I served in snack cups also from Walmart.
I added a little bit of plaid ribbon to our party cups for the Coca-Cola. Added a festive paper straw and we were all set on refreshments!
Create a Crafting Station
It’s not unusual for me to have a little crafting station set out during the whole season. Not only is it perfect for our card making sessions, but it’s a place to wrap presents. I like to wrap as I buy, that way I don’t have tons to do all at once.
I added a fun pine-cone print burlap table runner I found at Walmart to my table and filled cartons with all the supplies:
- Glitter
- Glue
- Assorted Ribbon
- Tags
- Appliques
- Muslin Bags
- Plaid Bags
- Mini Clothespins
- Gold ribbon
- Ornaments
- Washi Tape
- Scissors
- Wrapping Paper
- Christmas Stickers
Embellished Gift Bags
Embellishing fabric gift bags is a cinch and the perfect craft for kids of all ages! All you need are a few craft supplies, scissors and glue and you have the perfect little bags for candy, gift cards or small presents. You can even use them as tags for larger presents!
Start by trimming a length of ribbon to wrap around the bottom of a bag and adhere it with hot glue. Set it aside.
Make inexpensive custom tags with a some kraft wrapping paper and Christmas stickers.
Simply place the sticker on the wrapping paper and trim along the edges.
You can now write a sentiment on the back! Aren’t they cute? The perfect sized tags for our bags. Plus they carry on our Layer on Love theme!
Add Christmas felt shapes to the bag and trim to a clothespin with hot glue. Attach the tag to the bag and you’re all set!
Make each one different!
Inexpensive ornaments make great tags too!

Fill the bags with small gifts for those in need, either in the local hospital, church or community center. Here are some items we put in our bags:
