How to Sublimate a Felt Pillow With Cricut
Sublimating felt has been one of my favorite techniques since I started my sublimation journey. I especially like this project because it combines sublimation, Cricut, and sewing. I don’t share many sewing projects here, but I’ve been sewing since I was a teenager. I’ve sewn everything from bedding and home decor to costumes and apparel to small craft projects like this fun little pillow. I love how you can essentially sublimate your own fabric to make almost anything! Let’s get into it…
What you will need:
Cricut Machine (Maker or Explore, any model)
Heat Press (I used my Cricut AutoPress)
Craft Felt (must be polyester)
Poly-Fil
Sewing Machine/Needle and Thread (you can make this project with fabric glue for a no-sew craft)
This Project I created in Cricut Design Space (you will need to purchase the Boba Fett image in Design Space)
I created a quick video showing how my son and I created this little plushie, check it out below…
Now let’s go over the steps on how to sublimate a felt pillow…
Step 1:
Open my project in Cricut Design Space. It is already sized for printing on 8.5×11 paper. Do not mirror the images in Cricut Design Space or on your sublimation Printer. Since it’s two-sided, you won’t need to mirror any images, it’s set up just the way you need it. Turn off bleed and I personally like to use the dialog system to set my printer parameters. Load sublimation paper in your sublimation printer and print.
Step 2:
Now we move on to the sublimation part as shown in the video. Set your heat press to 400 degrees for 60 seconds. Place butcher paper down. Place the print on top of the felt, faced down, and secure it with heat-resistant tape. Cover with butcher paper and press.
Step 3:
When done, remove the paper. Repeat for the backside.
Step 4:
Load the Deep Point Blade in the Cricut, place the felt on a fabric grip mat, and secure it with painter’s tape.
Step 5:
In Cricut Design Space, select Felt Wool Fabric from the materials list and use more pressure. Cut. Remove the cut pieces from the mat when done. Repeat for the backside.
Step 6:
Pair the two pieces with the right sides facing each other. Pin or use clips to secure.
Step 7:
Sew along the edge leaving an opening at the bottom.
Step 8:
Turn inside out and fill with polyfill. Hand-sew the opening closed.
Isn’t he adorable? I love how bold the sublimation ink turns out on the felt. I can’t wait to make more of these little guys!
I hope you try this technique, and if you do please tag me on social @michellespartyplanit. I’d love to see how your pillows come out!
