Looking for a creative way to give a gift card to the Disney fan in your life? Instead of slipping it into an envelope, create a fun interactive gift card holder that opens to reveal a personalized message and your gift card inside. So let’s get started!
How to Make a Mickey Gift Card Holder in Cricut Design Space
I designed this Mickey-inspired gift card holder from scratch in Cricut Design Space using simple shapes and score lines to create an easy-to-assemble paper project. The best part? Once you understand the mechanism, you can customize it for birthdays, holidays, graduations, and just about any celebration.

The download includes:
- Rounded corner version
- Square corner version
- Optional Mickey embellishments
- Sentiment insert
Choose the version you prefer before sending the project to your Cricut.
Step 1: Prepare the Design in Cricut Design Space
Open the project in Cricut Design Space and choose whether you’d like to make the rounded corner or square corner version.
Hide the version you aren’t using before clicking Make.
The project includes score lines, cut lines, optional Mickey embellishments, and a sentiment insert that fits perfectly inside the card.
Step 2: Cut the Pieces
The project cuts on multiple mats.
- Cut the sentiment insert.
- Cut the main gift card holder from 12″ x 12″ double-sided scrapbook paper using a 12″ x 24″ mat.
- Cut the optional Mickey embellishments from coordinating cardstock.
For the best results, pay attention to the paper placement shown on your Cricut screen before loading the mat. Since the project uses nearly the full sheet, proper placement ensures nothing gets trimmed off.
Step 3: Score and Fold
Install your Scoring Stylus before cutting.
Once everything has been cut, fold along every score line and sharpen each fold with a bone folder.
Taking a few extra seconds to reinforce the folds will make assembly much easier and help the finished holder close neatly.
Step 4: Assemble the Gift Card Holder
Assembly is simple.
Fold the holder into shape and glue the designated tabs to form the gift card pocket.
The folded Mickey embellishments attach to each side of the holder, creating the hidden closure while also adding strength to the finished project.
Step 5: Personalize the Inside
The center panel is designed for your own creativity.
You can:
- Add a handwritten message
- Use Cricut pens to write a greeting
- Apply vinyl lettering
- Decorate with stickers
- Add die cuts and embellishments
For my sample, I used coordinating stickers from an Echo Park Paper collection to finish the design.
Step 6: Insert the Gift Card
Slide the gift card into the built-in pocket.
Close the holder and crease the folds one final time so everything lays flat.
The finished holder opens to reveal both your sentiment and the gift card inside, making it much more memorable than a standard envelope.
One Design, Endless Possibilities
Although I created this Mickey-inspired version first, the folding mechanism can easily be adapted for other occasions.
Some ideas include:
- Birthday
- Christmas
- Halloween
- Valentine’s Day
- Graduation
- Butterfly
- Pumpkin
- Heart
- Encouragement cards
By simply changing the decorative elements and patterned paper, you can use the same concept all year long.
Tips for Success
- Use double-sided scrapbook paper for the best finished look.
- Reinforce every fold with a bone folder.
- Add the optional Mickey embellishments for extra durability.
- Coordinate stickers and papers for a polished finish.
- Personalize the center sentiment for every recipient.
I love creating interactive paper projects, and this hidden gift card holder is one of my favorite original Cricut designs. It’s easy to customize, fun to assemble, and turns an ordinary gift card into something much more thoughtful.
