How to Create Stunning Buttons with the HTVRONT Button Maker: A Step-by-Step Guide
Materials Needed:
Before we begin, you will need the following materials:
- HTVRONT Button Maker
- Button components (shell, pinback, and mylar cover) Included with the Button Maker
- Printable button paper (for your designs)
- Printer (preferably a high-resolution color printer)
- Cutting tools (such as a circle cutter or scissors) Included with the Button Maker
- Design software (Canva, Adobe Illustrator, or similar)
- Template (to space your designs perfectly)
- HTV or sticker paper (optional, for adding extra details)
- Adhesive or glue (if adding embellishments)
- Ribbons (optional)
- Cutting Mat (to protect your work table)
Step 1: Design Your Buttons
The first step in creating your buttons is to design them. Your design should be eye-catching and convey the message of the campaign effectively. My son picked his favorite images from Canva for his, here are some tips for creating your own Election Themed Buttons…
- Keep it simple: A clear, bold message is essential. Use minimal text, focusing on the candidate’s name, slogan, or a key issue.
- Color scheme: Choose colors that are associated with the campaign or party. Red, white, and blue are popular choices, but don’t be afraid to use other colors that align with the candidate’s branding.
- Fonts: Use readable fonts that are bold and easy to read from a distance. Avoid overly decorative fonts that can be hard to decipher.
- Imagery: Include relevant symbols or images, such as the candidate’s portrait, party logo, or patriotic symbols like stars and stripes.
- Size and layout: Ensure your design fits within the button template. I created a Template you can use. Sign up for my newsletter to download.
You can use free design software like Canva, or more advanced tools like Adobe Illustrator, to create your design. Simply upload my template or create your own and space your graphics within the circles.
Step 2: Print Your Design
Once you’re satisfied with your design, it’s time to print it out. Use high-quality, paper for the best results. I used semi gloss paper.
Printing Tips:
- Printer settings: Set your printer to the highest quality setting to ensure your design comes out crisp and clear.
- Paper type: Select the appropriate paper type in your printer settings, usually “Glossy” or “Photo Paper.”
- Test print: Before printing all your designs, do a test print to check for color accuracy and alignment.
Step 3: Cut Out Your Design
After printing, carefully cut out your design using a circle cutter, paper punch or sharp scissors. Precision is key here; the better the cut, the more professional your button will look.
Cutting Tips:
- Use a circle cutter: A circle cutter will give you the most accurate results. Ensure it’s set to the correct diameter for your button size.
- Paper Punch: Paper punches work great as well, the trick is to get one the right size.
- Scissors: If using scissors, cut slowly and carefully, following the outline of your design. A steady hand will help avoid jagged edges.
- Cut multiple designs: If you’re making a batch of buttons, cut all your designs at once to save time later.
Step 4: Assemble the Button
With your design cut out, it’s time to assemble the button using the HTVRONT Button Maker.

Layer the components: Place the button shell in the machine first. Then, position your printed design on top, followed by the mylar cover. The mylar cover will protect your design and give the button a glossy finish.

Press the button: Pull the handle of the button maker down with firm, even pressure. This will crimp the edges of the shell around the design and mylar, securing them together.
Add the pinback: Place the pinback into the machine, with the pin facing outward. Press the handle again to attach the pinback to the button shell.

Check your work: Remove the finished button from the machine and inspect it. The edges should be smooth, and the design centered with no wrinkles or misalignment.
Step 5: Quality Control and Finishing Touches
Now that your buttons are assembled, it’s time to check them for quality. Look for any imperfections, such as off-center designs or bubbles under the mylar cover.

Quality Control Tips:
- Check alignment: Ensure the design is centered and aligned with the pinback.
- Smooth edges: Run your fingers around the edge of the button to feel for any rough spots or gaps.
- Clear mylar: The mylar cover should be smooth and free of bubbles or wrinkles.
If you notice any issues, you can usually fix them by carefully pressing the button again in the machine.
Step 6: Add Extra Details (Optional)
For a unique touch, consider adding extra details to your buttons. You can use HTV or sticker paper to apply additional elements to the button surface. You can even add ribbon to make your buttons stand out!
Ideas for Extra Details:
- HTV overlays: Cut out small shapes or text using heat transfer vinyl and apply them to the button for added dimension.
- Stickers: Use stickers to add embellishments or additional campaign slogans.
- Hand-drawn elements: If you’re artistically inclined, add hand-drawn details with permanent markers.
- Ribbon: Add strands of ribbon for extra detail!
