Are you familiar with the beautifully handcrafted Mexican decoration, Papel Picado? It’s one of my favorite elements of Mexican decor. To think artisans have the patience and talent to handcraft gorgeous intricate designs is amazing! I don’t know how to handcraft such art, but I did want to create a Papel Picado inspired banner for my Garden Fiesta using Oly*Fun Craft Material by Fairfield.
This post is created in partnership with Fairfield World. As always, all opinions, experiences and ideas are 100% my own.
I love how it came out and I’m excited to share it with you!
Let’s get started!
What you will need: (affiliate links below)
- Oly*Fun Multi Purpose Craft Material in Snow White, Bubble Gum,Orchid and Sky Blue
- Sizzix Big Shot Plus & Cutting Pads
- Banner XL Die
- Ornate Plate Bigz Die
- Scissors
- Hot Glue
- Twine
- Hole Punch
Start by cutting a piece of Oly*Fun cloth from the bolt. (Tip: Fold the material accordion style so you can cut several pennants with one pass of the Big Shot Plus, it’s a HUGE time saver!). Place the die on top of a cutting pad, then the Oly*Fun and a second cutting pad on top.
Pass the sandwich through the machine. Now repeat this process with the other three colors of Oly*Fun.
Next, center the banner pennants on top of the Ornate Plate die and sandwich it between two cutting pads. This will give you a pennant with a silhouette and an ornate die cut.
Repeat with the remaining colors of Oly*Fun, except for the Snow White pennants. You will want to keep those in tact.
Now, for the fun part! Lay the Snow White Pennants down and then layer a different color pennant on top as well as a different color ornate die cut. Hot glue each piece as you layer.
Repeat until you have created as many pennants as you need for your banner.
Using a hole punch, punch holes in each corner of the pennant.
Next, string on ribbon or twine to hang your banner.
And that’s it! A simple and beautiful Papel Picado inspired banner for any summer fiesta!
