How to Tie Dye with Infusible Ink and Sublimation
Do you want to add a subtle tie-dye effect to your shirts? Well, then this is the post for you. I’m sharing how you can do just that with sublimation using two materials. The technique is the exact same, except one you will be using a sublimation print printed with your sublimation printer. And the other way, you will be using the Infusible Ink product from Cricut. I created two quick videos walking you through each process below…
Technique 1 – Tie Dye with Sublimation Print
- Sublimation Print in a pattern of your choice (printed from a sublimation printer on sublimation paper)
- Sticker Paper
- Cricut AutoPress or EasyPress (Learn more about why I love my Autopress HERE)
- Cricut Shirt
- Heat Resistant Tape
- Butcher Paper
- Sublimation print of your choice for the main graphic (you can also apply an HTV design cut with your Cricut)
@michellespartyplanit Did you know you can make a tie dye effect with sublimtion? I love this no mess tshirt technique, and you can add a little or a lot! #EndlessJourney #crafttok #cricutmade #sublimation #nightmarebeforechristmas #tiedyetutorial #sublimationtutorial #howto #tutorial #tshirthack #halloween #htvront ♬ Fall October Halloween horror classic(177261) – rareNote
Tutorial Overview
Step 1:
Start by determining where you would like your main graphic to be on your shirt and apply sticker paper large enough to cover that area.
Step 2:
Starting with the bottom of the shirt, fold the shirt in an accordion style. Bunching it up as you go.
Step 3:
Move the shirt over to the Autopress. Make sure the shirt can fit under the print you are using for the tie-dye effect.
Step 4:
Tape the tie-dye print over the shirt with Heat Resistant Tape. Press at 400 degrees for 60 seconds. Be sure to protect your press mat and heat plate by making a butcher paper sandwich. (put butcher paper on the mat and on top of the project)
Step 5:
Remove the sticker paper and tape your print on your shirt. Press at 400 degrees for 60 seconds.
Step 6:
Remove the sublimation paper to reveal your design!
I love how subtle the tie-dye effect is (you can see it better on the video).
Technique 2 – Tie Dye with Infusible Ink
What you will need:
- Cricut Infusible Ink Transfer Sheets
- Sticker Paper
- Cricut AutoPress or EasyPress (Learn more about why I love my Autopress HERE)
- Cricut Shirt
- Heat Resistant Tape
- Butcher Paper
- Sublimation print of your choice (you can also apply an HTV design cut with your Cricut)
@michellespartyplanit Replying to @carolinexkai_designs Let’s give it a try!! You can do many of the same projects you make using a sublimation printer with infusible ink sheets. And they are available in so many fun patterns. You will use the exact same technique as described above, but instead of using a sublimation print from a sublimation printer for the tie-dye design, you will uses Infusible Ink in step 4.
I really love how the Infusible Ink adds another dimension with the patterned detail!
What do you think? Will you give this technique a try? Remember, you don’t need a sublimation printer when using Infusible Ink! You can cut a main graphic on HTV or Infusible Ink and add the tie dye with Infusible Ink!
