The xTool M1 Ultra also requires a power cord and USB cable for the initial setup, although you can switch to Wi-Fi for operation afterward.
Exploring the xTool M1 Ultra’s Versatile Features
One of the standout features of the xTool M1 Ultra is its ability to handle multiple crafting tasks with ease. Here’s a closer look at what this machine can do:
Laser Cutting and Engraving
The xTool M1 Ultra’s laser module allows you to cut and engrave materials like wood and some acrylic. The machine offers precise control over laser power and speed, ensuring that you can achieve the desired results for your projects. For example, you can set the laser to cut at 100% power with a speed of five millimeters per second, adding multiple passes for thicker materials. The engraving settings can be adjusted for depth and detail, making it easy to create intricate designs.
Safety is a top priority when using the laser module. The xTool M1 Ultra is equipped with a lid that protects your eyes from the laser. If the lid is opened during operation, the machine automatically stops, preventing any potential hazards. Additionally, it’s recommended to keep a fire extinguisher or fire blanket nearby when operating the laser, and never leave the machine unattended.
Blade Cutting with Multiple Blades
The xTool M1 Ultra comes with several blade options, including a fine-point blade, a knife blade, and a rotary blade. Each blade is suited for different materials and tasks. The fine-point blade is ideal for cutting thin materials like HTV (heat transfer vinyl) or paper, while the knife blade is better suited for thicker materials.
The machine also supports a multifunction module, which allows you to use additional tools like the foil tool and the rotary blade. The rotary blade, for instance, is perfect for cutting fabric, giving you the flexibility to work with a wide range of materials.
Inkjet Printing and Drawing with Pens
For those who want to add a personal touch to their projects, the xTool M1 Ultra offers an inkjet printing module. This module allows you to print in CMYK on porous surfaces like paper and wood. While the prints are not water-resistant, they are perfect for items that won’t be exposed to moisture.
The xTool M1 Ultra also includes a pen adapter, enabling you to draw or write on your projects with precision. Whether you’re creating custom gift tags or adding handwritten text to a design, the pen module provides a professional finish.
Now that we have gone over the capabilities, I’m sharing how I created my very first project. I created a small sign using 3mm basswood. I’m so excited about the printing capabilities, you know I had to try the laser module with the inkjet module.
In this project, we’ll print a PNG logo directly onto the wood using the inkjet module, then cut an oval shape around the logo with the laser module. So let’s get into it!
How to Print and Cut a Personalized Sign with the xTool M1 Ultra
Supplies Needed
- xTool M1 Ultra
- Inkjet and laser modules
- 3mm basswood sheet
- Triangular Prism Holder
- PNG file of your logo
- xTool Creative Space software
Step 1: Prepare Your Design in xTool Creative Space
Open xTool Creative Space: Launch the software and connect to your xTool M1 Ultra via Wi-Fi or USB.
Select Processing Mode: Since we are using the Inkjet and Laser modules, select Multi-module Processing.
Upload the PNG: Import your logo as a PNG file. Adjust the size to fit within the oval you want to cut around it, making sure it will fit well within your desired sign dimensions.
- Select Inkjet Mode: In xTool Creative Space, set the mode to Inkjet Printing for your logo layer.
- Adjust the Intensity: In the Easy Set Panel, set the intensity to around 80 for clear results, but you may need to adjust slightly depending on how the ink is absorbed.
Add the Oval Cut Shape: Use the shape tool to add an oval around the logo. Position it so that it frames your logo with equal spacing on all sides.
- Select Laser Cutting Mode: Switch to Laser Cutting mode for the oval shape layer in xTool Creative Space.
- Select your Material: Select your material from the Material Easy Set Library. You can also set the power and speed manually: For 3mm basswood, set the laser power to 100%, with a speed of around 5mm/s, and configure it for one pass.
Step 2: Set Up the Inkjet Module
- Install the Inkjet Module: Unlock and remove any installed modules, then slide the inkjet module into place and lock it down.
- Prepare the Inkjet Module: Insert the ink cartridges as directed by the manual, and ensure the module cover is in place to prevent drying when not in use.
- Calibrate if Needed: The system will notify you if you need to calibrate. Simply follow the instructions on the screen.
- Place the Basswood on the Triangular Prism Holder: Place the 3mm basswood sheet on the Triangular Prism Holder, align it with the guides within the machine to ensure precise positioning. Be sure to install the limit blocks on the prism holder per the instructions.
Step 3: Printing Your Design
Begin Printing: Click Process, then Start in xTool Creative Space. Remove the inkjet module after the print is complete.
Step 4: Swap to the Laser Module for Cutting
Install the Laser Module: Remove the inkjet module and install the 10W or 20W laser module (depending on your model).
Step 5: Cut the Oval Around Your Printed Logo
- Begin the Cutting Process: Click Process, confirm your settings, then press Start in the software.
- Monitor the Cut: For safety, keep an eye on the machine while cutting. The basswood oval should come out smoothly, creating a custom-shaped sign around your logo.
Step 7: Finishing Touches
- Remove and Clean the Basswood: Gently remove the basswood from the machine. If there’s any slight charring, you can lightly sand the edges to smooth them out.
- Optional Sealing: To protect the ink and add durability, apply a clear sealant over the printed logo.
Final Tips
- Adjust Print Settings as Needed: The first print may need small adjustments, especially with wood grain. Test on a scrap piece if you have one.
- Safety First: Always ensure proper ventilation and keep a fire extinguisher nearby when using the laser.
My custom logo sign on basswood is now complete, I’m so happy with how it turned out!
