Using the xTool M1 Ultra and xTool Heat Press with Heat Transfer Vinyl
If you’ve been following my blog you know that my friends over at xtool sent me the M1 Ultra and I was super impressed with the laser cutting and inkjet printing capabilities as shown in my first tutorial. So it’s no surprise that I’m super impressed with it’s vinyl cutting capabilities too! I’m excited to share my first HTV project with the M1 Ultra and the xTool Heat press, so let’s get into what you need to learn how to use xTool M1 Ultra for heat transfer vinyl.
Supplies You’ll Need:
- xTool M1 Ultra 4-in-1 Craft Machine
- xTool Heat Press Kit
- Heat transfer vinyl (HTV)
- Canvas tote bag
- Weeding tool
- xTool Cutting mat
- Computer with xTool Creative Space software installed
- Design file (SVG or PNG format)
- Teflon sheet or parchment paper
Step 1: Design Your Artwork in xTool Creative Space
For SVG Files
- Open xTool Creative Space: Fire up the xTool Creative Space software on your computer. This is where the magic begins!
- Upload Your Design: Click “Import” and select your SVG file. If you don’t have one ready, don’t worry—you can create a design right in the software.
- Mirror the Design: Since you’re using HTV, make sure to mirror your design. Simply select it and click the “Mirror” option.
- Set Your Material: Choose “Heat Transfer Vinyl” as the material in the settings. The software will adjust the cutting parameters automatically. How easy is that?
For PNG Files
- Import Your PNG: Click “Import” and select your PNG file. The software will place it on your canvas.
- Mirror the Design: Just like with SVGs, select the traced design and click the “Mirror” button to flip it horizontally.
- Trace the Image: Select the PNG file and click on the “Trace” tool in the toolbar. Click Auto Trace and it will set the path for you!
- Preview the Trace: Use the preview option to ensure your design has clean edges. If necessary, adjust the settings for better results.
- Set Your Material: Choose “Heat Transfer Vinyl” from the material list. The software will adjust the settings for precise cutting.
- Suggested Power Setting: I found the sweet spot for the cutting power was 75 instead of the default 100. This ensured clean cuts without cutting through the carrier sheet. Test your vinyl first.
Step 2: Load and Cut the HTV
- Load the Mat: Open the lid of the xTool M1 Ultra and place your mat on the cutting bed. Align it using the guides.
- Prep the Vinyl: Place your HTV shiny side down on the cutting mat. Make sure it’s smooth and lined up straight. Then close the lid.
- Install the Blade: Ensure the correct blade for HTV cutting is installed. The xTool M1 Ultra uses a standard fine-point blade for this material. To change the blade:
- Open the blade housing
- Insert the fine-point blade into the housing.
- Secure the lever and put back the housing cover.
- Start Cutting: Hit “Start” in the software, and let the M1 Ultra do its thing. It’s so precise, you’ll get clean cuts every time.
- Remove the HTV: Carefully take the mat out and peel away the excess vinyl. You’re ready to weed!
Step 3: Weed Your Design
- Grab Your Weeding Tool: Use a weeding tool to remove the unwanted vinyl, leaving only the parts of the design you want on your tote bag.
Step 4: Position the Design on Your Tote Bag
- Preheat the Tote Bag: Set your xTool Heat Press to preheat the tote bag for about 5 seconds. This removes wrinkles and moisture so your HTV adheres better.
- Place the Design: Lay your weeded design shiny side up on the tote bag. Use a ruler to center it.
- Secure It: Use heat-resistant tape to hold your design in place. Trust me, this step saves you from shifting disasters.
Step 5: Apply the Design with the Heat Press
I created a quick video showing the process, check it out below:
- Set the Heat Press: Turn on the xTool Heat Press and set it to 320°F for 15 seconds. This is a standard setting for most HTV, but check your vinyl’s instructions to be sure.
- Protect Your Design: Place a Teflon sheet or parchment paper over your design. This protects both the vinyl and your heat press.
- Press It: Position the heat press over the design and apply firm, even pressure. Let it work its magic until the timer beeps.
- Cool and Peel: Let the HTV cool for a few seconds, then peel off the clear carrier sheet. Peel slowly to ensure everything stays in place.
Step 6: Final Touches
- Inspect the Design: Check if every part of the vinyl adhered properly. If you notice any lifting, press it again for another 5-10 seconds.
- Admire Your Work: Run your fingers over the design to make sure it’s securely bonded. Now, take a step back and admire your masterpiece!
Tips for Success
- Test First: Always do a test cut on a small piece of HTV to ensure your settings are spot-on.
- Quality Matters: Invest in good HTV and a sturdy tote bag for the best results.
- Stay Organized: Store your vinyl flat in a cool, dry spot to avoid curling.
