If you’re looking for a fun and creative crafting project, magnetic bookmarks are an easy yet practical choice. Perfect as gifts, for personal use, or even to sell, these bookmarks combine functionality with charm. In this step-by-step tutorial, I’ll guide you through designing and making magnetic bookmarks using Canva and your Cricut machine. Let’s get started!
How to Make Magnetic Bookmarks Using Canva and Cricut
What you will need:
Canva (free version works!)
Cricut machine (Explore, Maker, or Joy)
Self Adhesive Holographic Laminate Sheet
I created a step by step video tutorial, check it out below:
Step 1: Create Your Designs in Canva
Set Up Your Canvas
-
- Open Canva and create a new design with custom dimensions of 8.5 x 11 inches (standard U.S. letter size). Ensure your unit of measurement is set to inches.
Select Images
-
-
- Choose some cute images or graphics. For this tutorial, I used emojis for a playful and relatable theme. Add a variety of designs to your canvas to provide options.
-
Design Your Bookmark Templates
- Start with a square or circle to serve as your bookmark’s main body. Use the color picker tool to match the background color to your image for a seamless look.
- Place your graphic (like a cute emoji) on the square or circle, ensuring it’s centered.
- Duplicate your graphic, flip it horizontally, and position it on the opposite side of the shape. This ensures the bookmark has a mirrored design when folded.
Add a Tab
- Create a rectangular tab at the top of your bookmark shape. This tab will fold over the page to keep the bookmark in place. Adjust the size and position to ensure it complements your design.
- Copy the tab and align it on the mirrored side of the design for symmetry.
Duplicate Designs
- Once you’ve created one template, duplicate it across your canvas until you’ve filled the page. Aim for 10 designs per page to maximize your space while leaving room for cutting.
Download Your Design
- Save your design as a PNG with a transparent background to prepare it for Cricut Design Space.
Step 2: Upload to Cricut Design Space
Import Your Design
-
- Open Cricut Design Space and upload your saved PNG. Choose Print Then Cut as your image type.
Resize for Cutting
-
- Once uploaded, you might receive a warning about the image size. Use the auto-resize tool to fit it within the printable area (8.5 x 11 inches).
Prepare for Printing
-
- Click Make It and select the correct material size (8.5 x 11).
Step 3: Print Your Bookmarks
-
- Choose your printer and enable bleed for better cutting accuracy.
- Use the system dialog to set your printer preferences. For best results, print on photo paper with settings like “Premium High Glossy.”
Print Your Design
-
- Print your design on an inkjet printer (e.g., Epson 2803). Let the ink dry completely before proceeding to the next step.
Step 4: Add a Laminated Finish
Apply Self-Adhesive Laminate
-
- Use a self-adhesive laminate sheet to protect your bookmarks and add durability. You can choose a plain or decorative laminate, such as holographic.
- Peel back a corner of the laminate sheet and carefully stick it over your printed design. Use a felt-covered ruler or squeegee to smooth out any air bubbles.
Trim Excess Laminate
-
- Ensure the laminate edges are neat and clean to make the cutting process easier.
Step 5: Cut Your Bookmarks with Cricut
Place on the Cutting Mat
-
- Secure your laminated sheet onto a standard grip Cricut mat.
Set the Material and Blade
-
- In Cricut Design Space, select Heavy Cardstock as the material type if your laminate and photo paper combination is thick. Adjust the pressure to “More” if needed.
- Use either the fine-point blade or the deep-point blade based on the material thickness.
Cut the Bookmarks
-
- Let Cricut cut your designs. If the cut isn’t clean, check before unloading the mat and re-cut if necessary.
Step 6: Attach the Magnets
Prepare Adhesive Magnets
-
- Use small adhesive-backed magnets. Test the polarity of each magnet to ensure they attract each other correctly when the bookmark is folded.
Attach Magnets to the Tabs
-
- Stick one magnet on each tab of the bookmark. Fold the tabs over to align and secure the magnets.
Optional: Add Packaging for Gifting or Selling
If you’re giving these bookmarks as gifts or selling them, create a presentation card using Cricut. You can design a simple cardstock holder and attach the bookmarks for a professional touch.
Tips for Success
- Test Before Cutting: Always double-check your design alignment and material settings before cutting to avoid errors.
- Experiment with Shapes: While this tutorial uses squares and circles, you can experiment with other shapes like hearts or stars for variety.
- Personalize Your Designs: Add text, names, or quotes to make your bookmarks even more special.
Making magnetic bookmarks with Canva and Cricut is a fun and straightforward project that allows for endless creativity. Whether you’re crafting for yourself, giving them as gifts, or selling them at craft fairs, these bookmarks are sure to impress.
Happy crafting!
