Looking for an easy and patriotic paper crafting project for Independence Day? Today I’m sharing how I created this handmade Fourth of July card with the Cricut Joy 2 using the machine’s scoring, drawing, and cutting features. This quick project combines layered patterned paper, cardstock, and a special USA 250 design element to create a festive card that’s perfect for celebrating America’s 250th birthday. Let’s get started!

DIY Fourth of July Card with the Cricut Joy 2
This project showcases several capabilities of the Cricut Joy 2 in one simple design, making it a great beginner-friendly project while still producing professional-looking results.
If you’re looking for creative ways to celebrate America’s Semiquincentennial, this card is a fun addition to your patriotic crafting collection.
Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday
The year 2026 marks a historic milestone as the United States celebrates 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Throughout the year I’ve been sharing a variety of USA 250-themed projects that combine crafting and creativity with patriotic celebrations.
This Fourth of July card coordinates perfectly with other projects in my USA 250 series and can be used as a greeting card, party decoration, keepsake, or even framed as part of your holiday decor.
Materials Needed
For this project I used:
- Cricut Joy 2
- Cricut Design Space
- Heavy white cardstock
- Echo Park patriotic patterned paper
- Fine Point Cricut Pen
- Cricut Joy 2 Scoring Tool
- Adhesive
- Fourth of July sticker sentiment
- LightGrip Mat
The combination of heavy cardstock and patterned paper creates dimension while keeping the card lightweight enough to mail.

Using Multiple Cricut Joy 2 Features in One Project
One of my favorite things about the Cricut Joy 2 is how versatile it is. For this card I incorporated three different machine functions:
Drawing
The Cricut Joy 2 used a pen to draw a special “250 Years” design on the back of the card. This small detail adds a commemorative touch and helps celebrate this important milestone in American history.
Drawing with the Cricut Joy 2 is a simple way to add personalized messages, decorative elements, or handwritten-style text to your projects. I removed the drawing from the project so I could share it in Cricut Design space, so feel free to add your own sentiment if the back
Scoring
The card base includes a scored center line that creates a clean, professional fold.
Using the scoring feature allows the cardstock to fold neatly without cracking or creating uneven edges. This simple step makes a big difference in the finished appearance of handmade cards. If you are using the Cricut Joy 2, you will be prompted to change the blade within the software.
Cutting
The Cricut Joy 2 cut all of the individual pieces used to create the American flag design.
The machine precisely cut:
- Card base
- Star section
- Stripe sections
This eliminates the need for measuring and hand-cutting, resulting in clean, consistent pieces every time.
Creating the American Flag Design
The focal point of the card is a layered American flag created using patterned paper from Echo Park.
I selected one of my favorite patriotic paper collections because it adds texture and visual interest without requiring additional embellishments.
To create the flag:
- Cut the card base from heavy white cardstock.
- Hand cut a rectangle for the star from patriotic patterned paper.
- Hand cut a larger rectangle for the stripe pieces from coordinating patterned paper.
- Adhere each section to the cardstock base.
The patterned paper adds subtle detail that gives the card a finished, professional appearance while maintaining a classic patriotic look. I took it a step forwarded and used a paper punch that cuts and embosses star shapes and added it to the center of the star section. This added a little extra texture.
Finishing the Inside of the Card
For the inside of the card, I kept things simple by adding a “Happy Fourth of July” sticker sentiment.
This makes the card ready to give to friends, family members, neighbors, teachers, or anyone celebrating Independence Day.
You could also personalize the inside with:
- A handwritten message
- Family photos
- A favorite patriotic quote
- A commemorative USA 250 message
Why I Love Making Handmade Holiday Cards
Handmade cards are one of my favorite quick crafting projects because they allow you to create something meaningful without requiring a lot of materials.
Unlike store-bought cards, handmade cards can be customized for specific recipients and occasions.
They’re also a great way to use patterned paper scraps and practice different Cricut techniques.
Projects like this one are especially fun because they combine:
- Paper crafting
- Cricut cutting
- Drawing techniques
- Layering
- Holiday decorating
All in one project.
