I created a full video for your reference, check it out below:
Step 1: Set Up Your Work Area and Machine
Before you start, it’s essential to ensure proper ventilation for your workspace. Laser cutting wood produces fumes, so having good airflow is critical. For my setup, I use a booster fan that connects to a hose, which vents the fumes outside through a window. You can find this booster fan on the WeCreat website.
Make sure your WeCreat 40W laser cutter is set up properly. If you’re unfamiliar with the machine’s setup, refer to part one of this series for a complete guide on setting it up. For this project, I didn’t need to use the pass-through system, but it’s a good idea to have it available for larger projects.
Step 2: Choose and Download Your Halloween Design
Now it’s time to select the design for your Halloween sign. I like to use Creative Fabrica for laser-cutting designs, and in this case, I searched for “Halloween laser sign.” When selecting designs, make sure they are in SVG format, which is ideal for laser cutting.
I found a cute ghost design that I loved and downloaded it to my computer. Once you’ve chosen and downloaded your file, you’re ready to move on to the next step.
Step 3: Load Your Design into the WeCreat Make It Software
Open the WeCreat Make It software and start a new project. This software is intuitive and user-friendly, making it easy to get started. Once you’ve created a new project, you’ll be greeted by a blank screen with a grid.
Import your SVG file by loading it into the software. The software will automatically place all the design elements onto your grid. At this point, you’ll want to separate the pieces based on the color of wood you plan to use.
Step 4: Prepare Your Design for Cutting
For my sign, I used four different colors of painted wood: black, white, purple, and another accent color for smaller details. To make sure each piece is cut from the correct wood color, I separated the design elements in the software.
- First, I zoomed out to see all the design pieces and moved them around.
- I started with the ghost pieces, which I planned to cut from white wood. I selected the ghost shapes and grouped them together.
- Next, I moved to the lettering and black pieces, grouping them and placing them on a new page in the software. This ensures that when I cut, I can cut all the black pieces at once.
- I repeated this process for each of the remaining colors: purple for the sign base and another color for the accent details (like little starbursts).
Step 5: Select the Material Settings in the Make It Software
Once your design is properly organized, it’s time to select your material settings. The WeCreat 40W laser cutter allows for custom material settings, which is handy if you’re using different types of wood. In this case, I used 3mm basswood, so I created a custom material setting for it.
To do this, I adjusted the parameters in the software based on tests I had run earlier. I recommend always testing your materials before starting a project to ensure the best results. After saving my custom material settings, I applied them to each page of my design.
Step 6: Start Cutting Your Halloween Sign
Now that everything is set up, it’s time to cut! I started with the black wood, which I had already placed in the machine. Before starting, I double-checked all my settings—it’s always a good idea to verify everything before cutting to avoid wasting materials. The one time I didn’t double-check, I made a mistake, so now I always follow the “measure twice, cut once” rule.
Once I was satisfied with my settings, I clicked the “autofocus” button in the software. This tells the machine to measure the distance between the laser and the material to ensure it cuts at the correct depth. After the machine completes this process, you’ll see a blue button in the software that allows you to start the cutting process.
Step 7: Monitor the Cutting Process
As the machine begins cutting, you’ll see an estimated completion time in the software, which helps you gauge how long the process will take. The WeCreat 40W laser handles painted wood effortlessly, making it a reliable tool for crafting intricate designs.
Step 8: Remove the Cut Pieces and Prepare for Assembly
Once the cutting is complete, safely open the machine and remove your cut pieces. If any small pieces fall through the grate, don’t worry—there’s a tray at the bottom of the machine to catch them.
Take a moment to admire the results! My cuts were clean with no jagged edges, and everything looked just as I had hoped. Now it’s time to assemble the sign.
Step 9: Assemble and Glue Your Halloween Sign
To assemble the sign, I used wood glue and a small brush to apply glue to the back of each cut piece. Following the original design, I carefully placed each piece onto the sign base. You can personalize your sign at this stage, making adjustments to suit your style.
Once all the pieces were in place, I added a bit of trim and a ribbon for hanging, as well as a cute faux leather bow to complete the look.
Step 10: Enjoy Your Custom Halloween Sign!
Your spooky and cute Halloween sign is complete! The precision of the WeCreat 40W laser cutter makes the project look professional, and it’s sure to be a standout piece in your Halloween decor.
I’m incredibly impressed with the power and precision of the WeCreat 40W laser cutter.
