Happy Wednesday!
My son LOVES Monsters Inc. and Monsters University as you can see by last year’s Monsters University Pre-Scare School party. Since that party, I have received several questions regarding these fun Mike Wazowski inspired cupcake toppers that I made. Today I am happy to share how I made them so you can add them to your next Monster party!
Please note: The ideas shared here are intended for personal use only and are not for resale or commercial use. If you choose to recreate these adorable monsters for your child’s next party, inspirational credit is much appreciated!
Monster Cupcake Topper Tutorial
I originally created these little guys using my Cricut Expression 2 but have since upgraded to the Cricut Explore. For the purposes of this tutorial, I will be sharing how to make them using the Cricut Design Space software. If you have the Mini Monsters Cartridge you can still make them with the Expression or Expression 2 using the same general idea.
After you launch Cricut Design Space, search for and select the Mini Monsters set. If you do not own it, you can purchase just the monster needed for this project.
Within the Mini Monsters Set, select this cute little monster.
Once you select the monster, it will be inserted on your canvas
Click on the eyeballs in the layers menu to hide all other layers except for the light purple one as show above.
To resize the image, click and drag the bottom corner of the image and increase the size to 3.75 inches wide for the cupcake topper.
Click the green GO button. Increase the desired quantity on the Mat Preview window and click the green Go Button.
Load the machine with green cardstock on your cutting mat. Once you have selected the appropriate paper type on your machine, click the Cricut logo on your machine to cut.
Once the machine has finished cutting, eject the cutting mat and remove each monster from the page.
With a pair of scissors, cut off the two center legs. Now your monster is looking a lot like Mike!
At this point you can apply Monster Eye Ball Stickers available in my Shop. Alternatively. you can punch several circles with a circle punch to create your own eyeballs.
And that’s how I made the Mike inspired monster topper! Now you can adhere him to a straw or a lollipops stick for a topper!
Looking for a 3D version for straw toppers or favor bag toppers?
Follow the directions above, except enlarge the image to 4 inches wide. And instead of adding the sticker to the monster directly, you can add it to a 2 inch circle.
For a straw topper, make two slits on the monster with a craft knife and slip the straw through the slits. Then glue the circle on the straw.
For a bag topper, attach the 2 inch circle to the monster with 3d foam and then glue it to a large 3 inch scalloped circle. You can then glue the scalloped circle to a clothespin and attach it to the top of your treat bags!
Make a full page Mike for a centerpiece!
Have extra eyes?
Attach them to your MU Inspired Party Favor Bags!
Or add them to candy bars!
The possibilities are endless!
I hope you find this tutorial helpful and inspirational for your next Monster party!
Thank you for stopping by and God Bless!
