Are you looking for a fun project you can complete in an afternoon? How about a DIY Children’s Reading Nook for your little reader? My little guy loves to read and now that school is back in session, we decided to create a little reading and lounging space for him to call his own. With a little bit of Americana Decor Satin Enamels and crates from Michaels along with a hand me down kid’s chair; we had a little area set up for him in no time at all!
DIY Children’s Reading Nook
What you will need:
- Americana Decor Satin Enamels in Pure White
- Paint Brush
- Sand Paper
- Drop Cloth or Paint Shelter
- Children’s Chair
- ArtMinds® Wood Crate Carry All (2)
American Decor Satin Enamels (along with the Metallics & Chalky Finish)can be found in the Stains and Finishes aisle at your local Michaels as well as online.
I started by lightly sanding my chair with sandpaper. It was getting a little windy so I decided to pop up my small Spray Shelter that my friends from Home Right sent me recently to protect my chair attracting dust and particles. As you can see by the background, we live around mountains, and with the drought it’s pretty dry terrain.
Next, I applied one coat of paint on the chair, as you can see the Satin Enamels provides great coverage. Once it dried I went on to apply 3 more coats because I knew my little guy was going to be getting a lot of use of his refreshed chair. Next, I went on to paint the crates. Since the crates were unfinished, no sanding was needed. I was able to paint the chair and crates with just two 8 oz jars of paint!
Time to Decorate!
With a few floor pillows and a shaggy rug, my little man now has a comfy spot to read. He can either sit in his newly refreshed chair or lay down and read! Isn’t it perfect? I love the bright white!
Next, I filled the crates with his favorite books and a couple of toys. I also added his favorite pals for him to cuddle with.
And that’s it! A simple and fun little space for my little guy to cultivate his love for a great book!
I’m heading back to Michaels this week for a couple of more crates. I still have some paint left and I’d like to hang another crate on the wall for more toys and books. Wouldn’t that be cute?
Thank you for stopping by, don’t forget to check out your local Michaels for all the new Americana Decor paints!
Happy Painting!

That spray shelter is a cool concept. I tend to make a mess painting and this would be great for me.
This is so cute! My son would love this idea.
Oh my daughter will love this. Thanks for sharing.
Everyone needs their own little reading nook, especially kids. This is adorable and I will definitely check out these new paints when I’m in Michael’s.
I always encourage my kids to read. it’s one of the best things that we can teach them. There’s nothing like reading to learn new things and to experience things without having to leave the house. I love that you created a special place for your child to read, this will definitely encourage him to read more.
The final result is so cute and cozy! Love this idea
Whistle* Awesome awesome monster theme. Mad respect to you for promoting books and reading. Love the reading nook

I totally needed that spray shelter when I lived in my apartment!

I’ve never seen those little tents for chairs! That is so cool!
I really like what you did with the chair. I think it looks so much better in white.
That looks like a fun design! I wouldn’t mind having that set for my own room, I really love Monsters even though they’re really not the main header of this post.
What a precious spot for kids to read. Very cute. I love the overall feel it gives.
