Have you seen the new Disney Descendants movie yet? We did! My little man and I loved it! Such a cute spin on the beloved Villains.
If you know me at all, you will know that I have always loved the Villains in the Classic Disney Movies. When I was a child, you’d would never catch me in a tiara pretending to be a princess, the goth girl in me always wanted to be the super cool Villain. So naturally, I was elated when Disney started to focus on the Villains in recent years. Have you seen how the Villains take over Disneyland around Halloween time? I love it!
Descendants Party
Of course, my favorite villain has always been Maleficent as you can guess from the Maleficent party I styled last year. When I saw the previews of the new Disney Channel movie, I just had to jump at the chance to throw a Watch Party and share how you can plan a Disney Descendants Party at home too!
How to Plan a Disney Descendants Party – Party Tips
Whenever I plan a party, I like to start with a backdrop. It really sets the tone. For this party, I started by lining my wall with purple bulletin board paper. I then hung up four Descendants Posters on Canvas (see tutorial below) to create 4 sections on my dessert table with coordinating table runners. For a focal point, I ordered the most amazing handmade character letters from Tancy Creations on Etsy and displayed one under each of the Descendants.
For dessert, I baked a batch of cupcakes and a big batch of buttercream frosting which I tinted with food coloring to compliment each of the characters. For Jay, Jafar’s son, I made blue frosting and sprinkled disco dust for extra flair. I added gold glitter cupcake wrappers from Bella Cupcake Couture and filled tiny gold favor boxes with candy. I then placed them on a wall decor piece I found.
PARTY PLAN-IT TIP: When decorating your party table, don’t limit yourself to traditional food displays, look around your house to see what you can reuse that will match your theme! Just make sure your food doesn’t actually touch anything that is not deemed “food safe”!
For drinks, I made blueberry and cherry punch served in re-purposed frappuccino glasses. I added a tulle sash and a straw for that extra special touch!
I added a Marquee heart to the table as well, isn’t it young and fun?
For Mal’s section of the table, I added green hearts to purple candy filled favor boxes and made green frosting for the cupcakes. I added purple disco dust and little black crows to the cupcakes for toppers. I also displayed lace line battery operated candles to match Mal’s outfit. I think my favorite part of the movie were the fun costumes! Loved them all!
PARTY PLAN-IT TIP: Don’t have coordinating cake plates? That’s ok! Set a plastic tray on top of a candle holder! I had this Crow candle holder in my Halloween stash and it was perfect for Mal! She is, after all, the daughter of Maleficent! I used different resin trays and candle holders to display each handmade letter on the table.
For Evie, who actually turned out to be my favorite Descendant, I topped the cupcakes with white buttercream which I sprayed with Gold Color Mist by Wilton that I found at WalMart. I then added little gold disco “fairie” dust, a royal red heart and a regal blue cupcake wrapper.
I also made some “Magic Mirrors” with my Sizzix Big Shot and added them to royal blue popcorn boxes. I then filled them with gold wrapped buttermints.
And of course you can’t represent the Evil Queen’s daughter without an big Poison Red Apple! I placed it on a stack of “evil books” from my Halloween stash.
PARTY PLAN-IT TIP: Halloween decor is already in stock at some craft stores! Now is the time to stock up on decor that you can use for your Descendants party and for Halloween. Be sure to hit the stores for after Holiday clearance sales too, that’s when I always stock up!
For Carlos, Cruella’s Son, I topped the cupcakes with white buttercream and added black candies from WalMart for “spots”. I filled polka dot ice cream cups with gumballs and white popcorn boxes with popcorn.
PARTY PLAN-IT TIP: Think outside the cake box! Use cupcake sprinkles and candies to line your plates. These little “dog” bones are also from my Halloween baking stash which I picked up on clearance in November. They added just that extra something, don’t you think?
Let’s Get the Party Started!
Once the table was set, it was Movie time!
My boys had a blast loading up on snacks and candy!
HOW TO CREATE A DESCENDANTS BACKDROP – TUTORIAL
Who’s ready to start party planning? Start with a Descendants Backdrop! Backdrops don’t have to be ellaborate, simple ideas are often the funnest. And best of all, these posters can be reused in a bedroom or bonus room!
For my backdrop, I purchased a copy of the Descendants Poster-A-Page Book which included 7 Supersize Posters. If you can’t find it in your local WalMart, it is available at Walmart.com.
The book is jam packed with full-page photos of the cast, also great for framing! How cute would these look in 8×10 frames on the dessert table?
I also picked up four black mounted canvases at my local craft store to frame the posters. You can use black poster board just as easily. Just add a little bit of double sided tape and Voila! An affordable and easy backdrop!
Simply hang them up on your wall and start decorating your Dessert Table!
Are you ready to plan your own Descendants Party?
Head on over to Walmart to get the Original Movie Soundtrack to set the stage!
You can find the CD in the Music Section at Walmart. While you are there, pick up the DVD! Or if you have Disney Channel, don’t forget to set your DVR!
Thank you for visiting and I hope you are inspired to plan your own Villainous Party!
