I love felt and by now you should know how I feel about Laura Kelly, nothing but love! So of course, I jumped at the chance to create a fun Teacher’s Gift using Laura Kelly’s Sizzix Apple Die!
Just a bit of background, I have been sewing for over 25 years (yikes, I feel old suddenly) so I know a little bit about fabric. I know that felt is available in a variety of thickness and materials. I usually use basic acrylic craft felt for my projects (instead of wool or cotton). But what I didn’t know was that the cut by the yard Kunin Eco-fi Plus™ Premium Felt is made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles! How awesome is that? How to Make Felt Apple Coasters
Ok, now back to the project. Not only did Laura send me a stack of wonderful felt, but she sent me the Sizzix Bigz Apple Die that I’ve been coveting! Plus lots of ribbon and of course a Lollipic, yay!
Once I decided to make a set of Apple Coasters, I collected a few of Laura’s buttons, her Sizzix Apple Bigz Die, some Red felt, my Sizzix Big Shot, 2 Cutting Pads, 2 pieces of white Scoreboard Mat-Board, spray adhesive and Aleene’s Fabric Fusion.
First, I cut two pieces of felt the same size as the mat-board and I adhered the felt on both sides with spray adhesive.
Next, I made a sandwich with the felt covered mat-board, dies and cutting pads. The sandwich for Bigz dies is as follows: Cutting pad, Bigz Die, mat-board/felt and a second cutting pad. Then I ran it through my Big Shot.
I was able to get two Apples from one piece of mat-board. I repeated this process until I had a total of four Apples.
Next, I adhered one of Laura’s green buttons to the leaf of the apples with Aleene’s Fabric Fusion. I was thinking about adding more embellishments to the apple, but decided against it. I wanted to be sure the coaster surface remained flat to reduce the chances of accidental spills. Coffee stains on student homework would be bad!
As a final touch, I wrapped the coasters with some green trim (from Laura).
And that’s it, a simple and kid friendly gift for your child’s favorite teacher(s)! Add a custom stamped tag and you have the perfect gift! By the way, Laura Kelly also has her own line of stamps! That woman does it all!
