How to Apply Heat Transfer Vinyl with the Cricut Mug Press
When making custom mugs, I prefer either sublimation or Heat Transfer Vinyl. Both of which I can do with the Cricut Mug Press! The Mug Press is designed for Infusible Ink Sheets, but this hack is an easy way to apply HTV rather than a mini press. So let’s get into it!
What you will need:
Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTVRONT is my HTV of choice)
Cricut Machine of your choice (I like to use the Cricut Joy for mug projects)
Mug Design from within Cricut Design Space (I created this one)
Heat Resistant Mat
I create a short video showing you how easy it is so check it out below:
Let’s walk through the steps…
How to Apply Heat Transfer Vinyl with the Cricut Mug Press
Step 1:
In Cricut Design Space, open the design and send it to your machine. Place the HTV on your mat with the shiny side down, and cut.
Step 2:
Weed the design and wrap it around the mug. Make sure there are no air bubbles between the carrier sheet and the mug/
Step 3:
Turn on the Mug Press and when ready, place the mug in the press. Press down the lever.
Step 4:
Watch the lights and when the third light turns on, remove it from the press. Set on a heat-resistant mat and let cool.
Step 5:
Remove the carrier sheet and that’s it!
What do you think? I love how easy it is to press the HTV with the Cricut Mug Press. And it’s dishwasher (top rack) safe!

That’s a super cute idea for Fathers Day. I love the idea of using HTV on mugs; but how well does the HTV hold up? Are HTV mugs dishwasher/microwave safe or are they hand wash only?
I’ve washed mine in the dishwasher, top rack several times and they still look great!
Does it have to be a cricut mug or would any mug work?
any mug that fits will work.
Have you ever tried to use glitter HTV with mugs or tumblers?
Yes! And it works as well.
How long would you need for a 2nd layer please?
Would a dollar store mug work for this project?
It should!
