How to Sublimate Pinwheels
These pinwheels are super easy to create and are perfect for any holiday, party and occasion. How cute would they be for a graduation party? Let’s get into what you will need to get started…
Supplies You’ll Need:
- PYD Life Sublimation Pinwheel Blanks – 20 pk
- Sublimation Printer (e.g., Epson, Sawgrass, or converted EcoTank) I’m using my Epson F570
- Sublimation Paper (Roll or Sheet, depending on printer type)
- Sublimation Ink
- Heat Press (Clamshell, Swing-Away, Auto, or Manual) I’m using my xTool Heat Press
- Heat-Resistant Tape
- Protective Parchment (I use butcher paper)
- Heat-Resistant Gloves
- Computer with Graphic Design Software (Canva, Photoshop, or Illustrator)
- Scissors or Cutting Tool
- Heat-resistant Mat (to provide stability while pressing)
I created a quick video to walk you through the steps, check it out below:
Step 1: Create Your Design in Canva (or Alternative Software)
- Open Canva, Photoshop, or Illustrator and create a new design with custom dimensions: 8.4 inches x 8.8 inches.
- Upload Graphics or choose from available elements to create a fun design.
- Align Your Artwork with the center of the template to ensure all elements fit within the pinwheel’s shape.
- Consider Adding Text such as names, dates, or fun quotes for personalization.
- Incorporate Layering Effects for a multi-dimensional look using shadows and gradients.
- Download the File as a high-resolution PDF for print with CMYK settings to ensure accurate color reproduction.
Step 2: Printing with Your Sublimation Printer
- Load the Sublimation Paper into your printer (whether using sheets or a roll, ensure proper feed settings).
- Open Your Print Manager (Epson Print Manager, Sawgrass Print Manager, or other relevant software).
- Use the Nest Feature (if applicable) to fit multiple pinwheel designs on the sheet or roll to maximize material usage and reduce waste.
- Check Print Alignment and make sure the design fits properly within the printing margins.
- Adjust Print Settings:
- Paper Size: Based on your sublimation paper size
- Print Quality: High
- Color Mode: CMYK for accurate color reproduction
- Ensure mirroring is enabled.
- Print the Design and allow the ink to fully dry before moving on to pressing.
Step 3: Preparing the Pinwheel Blanks
- Remove the Clear Plastic Protective Film from both sides of the sublimation pinwheel blank. (This is super important—otherwise, the ink won’t transfer properly!)
- Cut out the printed design close to the edges.
- Position the Design Face Down onto the sublimation side of the pinwheel blank.
- Secure with Heat-Resistant Tape to keep it from shifting.
Step 4: Setting Up Your Heat Press
- Preheat the Heat Press to 355°F (check your heat press manual for optimal settings).
- Set the Timer to 50 seconds.
- Use Medium Pressure to ensure an even transfer.
- Place a Protective Sheet on the heat press to prevent ink from transferring onto the platen.
- Ensure Even Heat Distribution by making sure the press is properly leveled.
- Use a Heat-Resistant Mat underneath for added stability.
Step 5: Sublimating the Pinwheel Blanks
- Position the Pinwheel Blank with the design face-down on the press.
- Cover with Another Protective Sheet.
- Press at 355°F for 50 Seconds.
- Carefully Lift the Press and remove the blank using heat-resistant gloves.
- Peel Off the Sublimation Paper while still warm to reveal your design.
- Allow to Cool Completely before handling further.
Step 6: Sublimating the Other Side (Optional and Recommended)
- If you want both sides sublimated, repeat the process for the opposite side.
- Make sure the first side is completely cooled before flipping and repeating the pressing process.
- Use a Fresh Protective Sheet to prevent ink transfer from previous presses.
Step 7: Assembling the Pinwheel
- Follow the assembly instructions included with the pinwheel blanks.
- Ensure each piece fits correctly and the pinwheel spins smoothly.
- Test the Spin Mechanism to make sure it functions properly before use.
- Secure Any Loose Parts with a small drop of adhesive if needed.
- Consider Adding Finishing Touches such as UV protection spray for outdoor durability.
Tips for Best Results:
- Test Print First: Print a sample to check for color accuracy.
- Use the Nest Feature: This helps fit multiple designs on the roll or sheet to save paper.
- Consistent Pressure: Ensure even pressure across the blank to avoid ghosting.
- Use a Well-Ventilated Area: This prevents ink fumes from building up while pressing.
- Experiment with Different Designs to create unique and eye-catching patterns.
- Store Sublimated Blanks Properly to prevent any damage before assembly.
- Enhance with Special Finishes: Consider adding metallic or holographic sublimation accents for extra flair.
By following these steps, you’ll have beautifully customized sublimation pinwheels that are perfect for decorations, parties, and gifts! Let me know if you give this a try—I’d love to see your designs!
Happy Crafting!
