Calling all Mickey and Minnie Mouse fans! If you love Disney and Halloween as much as we do, you’re going to love these adorable DIY Mickey and Minnie Mouse pumpkins!
I originally created these no-carve pumpkins for Oriental Trading’s Fun365, and they’re still one of my favorite Disney-inspired Halloween decorations. With a couple of foam pumpkins, acrylic paint, and a little felt, you can transform ordinary pumpkins into everyone’s favorite mouse duo!
The best part? Since we’re using foam pumpkins, you can bring them out year after year. No carving required! I’m sharing the complete step-by-step tutorial so you can make your own Mickey and Minnie Mouse pumpkins. Let’s get started!

DIY Mickey and Minnie Mouse Pumpkins for Halloween
These Disney-inspired pumpkins are perfect for Halloween party decorations, a Disney-themed Halloween display, or simply adding a little Mickey and Minnie magic to your fall decor.
Mickey gets his classic red shorts with two white buttons, while Minnie gets her signature red polka dots and a matching bow. Their ears are made from felt and craft wire, making them lightweight and easy to attach to the foam pumpkins.

Supplies You’ll Need
- 2 orange foam pumpkins
- Black acrylic craft paint
- Red acrylic craft paint
- White acrylic craft paint
- Foam paintbrushes
- Painter’s tape
- Black craft felt
- Red craft felt, red polka-dot fabric, or red polka-dot faux leather for Minnie’s bow
- Craft wire
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Scissors
- Chalk for tracing
- White paint pen (if using plain red felt)
- Paint dotting tool or small foam dauber

You can make both pumpkins as a matching set or choose your favorite character!
How to Make Mickey and Minnie Mouse Pumpkins
Step 1: Prepare the Pumpkins
Start by wrapping painter’s tape around the middle of each foam pumpkin. This will help separate the black upper section from the red lower section.
Try to keep the tape at approximately the same height on both pumpkins so they’ll look like a matching set.
Step 2: Paint the Top Half Black
Using a foam brush, paint the top half of each pumpkin with black acrylic craft paint.
Allow the paint to dry, then apply another coat if needed for even coverage.
I like using a foam brush for this project because it’s easy to work the paint into the grooves of the foam pumpkins.
Step 3: Make the Mickey and Minnie Mouse Ears
While the paint is drying, print and cut out the Mickey and Minnie ear template.
Using chalk, trace the circular ear pattern onto black craft felt. You’ll need eight felt circles total to make four finished ears, two for Mickey and two for Minnie.
Cut out all eight circles.
Next, use craft wire to form a circle approximately the same size as your felt ear.
Twist the ends together, leaving approximately three inches of wire extending from the bottom.
Fold the wire tail in half and twist it together to strengthen it. This creates the support that will be inserted into the foam pumpkin.
Repeat until you have four wire ear frames.
Place a wire frame on one felt circle and secure it with hot glue.
Apply additional hot glue around the outer edge of the felt and place another felt circle on top, sandwiching the wire between the two layers.
Make sure the wire tail extends from the bottom of the ear.
Repeat until you have four completed ears, then set them aside.
Step 4: Paint the Bottom Half Red
Once the black paint has dried, carefully remove the painter’s tape.
Paint the bottom half of both pumpkins red, using the black paint line as your guide.
Allow the red paint to dry and apply a second coat if needed.
Step 5: Make Minnie’s Signature Bow
No Minnie Mouse pumpkin would be complete without her adorable polka-dot bow!
For my original project, I made the bow using red craft felt and added white polka dots with a paint pen. You can also use red polka-dot fabric or lightweight faux leather if you prefer!
Start with your chosen material and cut two rectangular sections for the bow and one narrow strip, approximately 1 inch by 3 inches, for the center.
Pinch one rectangular section together in the middle and fold it into a fan-like bow shape. Secure the folds with hot glue.
Repeat with the second section, then position both pieces together to form the complete bow.
Wrap the narrow strip around the center of the bow and secure it on the back.
If you’re using plain red felt, use a white paint pen to add polka dots across the bow. Allow the paint to dry completely.
If you’re using red polka-dot fabric, you can skip painting the dots! Lightweight interfacing can help soft fabric hold its shape, and folding the raw edges toward the back will give the bow a cleaner finish.
For faux leather, choose a lightweight, flexible material that can be folded without cracking. Test your adhesive on a scrap first, since some faux leather backings don’t bond well with hot glue.
Step 6: Add Mickey and Minnie’s Finishing Details
Once the red paint on both pumpkins has completely dried, it’s time to add the finishing touches!
For the Minnie Mouse pumpkin, use white acrylic paint and a paint dotting tool to create polka dots across the red lower half.
Space the dots randomly for that classic Minnie Mouse look.
For the Mickey Mouse pumpkin, add two white dots to the front of the red section to represent the buttons on Mickey’s shorts.
Allow the white paint to dry before assembling the pumpkins.
Step 7: Attach the Mouse Ears
Carefully insert the twisted wire stems from the completed felt ears into the top of each foam pumpkin.
Position two ears on Mickey and two ears on Minnie, adjusting the spacing until you’re happy with how they look.
The wire supports help keep the felt ears upright without adding unnecessary weight to the pumpkins.
Step 8: Add Minnie’s Bow
To finish Minnie, position your completed red polka-dot bow near the base of the pumpkin stem, centered between the ears.
Attach the bow with hot glue if your chosen material is compatible.
For extra stability, add a little glue to the back of the bow where it meets the ears.
And that’s it! Your Mickey and Minnie Mouse pumpkins are ready for Halloween!
Display Your Mickey and Minnie Mouse Pumpkins
Aren’t they adorable?
I love how a couple of simple foam pumpkins can become such fun Disney-inspired Halloween decorations.
Display them together on a Halloween party table, mantel, entryway table, or alongside your other Disney Halloween decorations.
Since these are made with felt, craft wire, and acrylic paint, I recommend displaying them indoors.
And when Halloween is over, simply store them away until next year!
Tips for Making Your Disney Halloween Pumpkins
Let the paint dry between coats. Foam pumpkins may need more than one coat of acrylic paint for even coverage. Allowing each coat to dry will give you a cleaner finish.
Use the printable ear template. Cutting matching felt circles makes it easier to create uniform Mickey and Minnie ears.
Don’t skip the wire supports. The wire helps the felt ears maintain their shape and provides a way to insert them into the foam pumpkins.
Choose your favorite bow material. Red felt is great for a simple handmade bow, while polka-dot fabric and faux leather offer fun alternatives. Lightweight materials work best.
Secure Minnie’s bow. Attaching the bow to the ears as well as the pumpkin helps keep it in place.
Make them reusable. Store your pumpkins somewhere dry and avoid placing heavy decorations on top of the felt ears.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use real pumpkins for this project?
You could adapt the painting technique for real pumpkins, but I recommend foam pumpkins for this project. They’re lightweight, easy to decorate, and can be reused every Halloween.
Can I use fabric instead of felt for the mouse ears?
Yes, but fabric alone may be too soft to hold the circular shape. You can add stiff interfacing or another lightweight stabilizer between the fabric layers. Keep the wire support so the ears can be attached to the pumpkins.
Can I use faux leather for Minnie’s bow?
Absolutely! Lightweight red polka-dot faux leather is a fun alternative to felt. Just make sure it’s flexible enough to fold into the bow shape and use an adhesive that’s compatible with the backing.
Do I need a Cricut to make these pumpkins?
Nope! I made the original project using basic craft supplies, including scissors, felt, wire, paint, and hot glue. No cutting machine required!
Can these pumpkins be displayed outside?
I recommend keeping them indoors or in a well-protected covered area. Moisture and outdoor weather can damage the felt ears and bow.
