How to Sublimate on Glass Cutting Boards
If you follow me on social media, you may have seen my video earlier this year sharing how I experimented with sublimation and the dollar tree glass cutting boards. I started my trials with infusible ink and the Easy Press. If you missed that video, I’ll post it at the end of this post. I found that with the easy press, I wasn’t able to put enough pressure to get edge-to-edge results. So, I thought it was about time to give this project another try but this time I will use my regular heat press. I also used my Cricut to get a precise cut of the vinyl, and I highly recommend it if you have a Cricut. Let’s go over what all you will need for this project:
Materials you will need:
Dollar Tree Glass Cutting Boards
Rubbing Alcohol and lint-free rag
Scissors or Craft Knife
Optional supplies:
This Cutting Template I created in Cricut Design Space to fit both the round and square cutting boards.
I used this graphic bundle for this project.
I created a quick video showing you the process, check it out below:
Let’s go over the steps a little slower:
Step 1:
If you are using your Cricut, open my template in Cricut Design Space. Load the vinyl on the mat and select matte vinyl as your material. Cut and weed. If you aren’t using the Cricut, you can measure and cut the vinyl by hand or apply the vinyl to the glass and trim the excess with a craft knife. (You can see how I did that in the infusible ink video below).
Step 2:
Remove the rubber feet from the glass and wipe it down with rubbing alcohol to remove the residue.
Step 3:
Apply transfer tape to the vinyl and burnish with the scraper. Remove the carrier sheet and apply the vinyl to the back side (smooth side) of the glass. Burnish with the scraper to eliminate any air bubbles.
Step 4:
Print your design with your sublimation printer on sublimation paper (no need to mirror the design). Place your sublimation print face down on top of the vinyl, center it, and secure it with heat-resistant tape.
Step 5:
Set your heat press to 400 degrees and the timer to 60 seconds. Place a piece of butcher paper down on your press, then place the glass with the paper side down and then another piece of butcher paper on top. Press for 60 seconds. When done, rotate 45 degrees and press again for another 60 seconds. Repeat until you have pressed for a total of 4 mins, rotating 45 degrees each time.
Step 6:
Carefully remove the glass from the press, don’t forget to use heat-resistant gloves, the glass will be very hot! Once cooled enough to handle, remove the paper. I was able to remove the paper without a problem. However, your experience may vary based on the paper, ink, and vinyl you use. So, if your paper does not come off easily, I’ve heard that soaking the cutting board in a shallow pan of water helps release the paper. Then, gently remove any remaining paper with a wet rag.
These look awesome with backlight…
Doesn’t that look amazing? You can still use this as a cutting board, just put the rubber feet back on the back. This is now “hand wash only” and be careful not to get the backside dirty/wet. I personally would use it as a trivet for hot dishes, or even a candle! You can even leave it up as home decor for the spooky season!
If you don’t have a sublimation printer, you can still create this with infusible ink transfer sheets, as I did in the video below. I do recommend using a traditional heat press for the right amount of pressure. 🙂

I hope you give this project a try, there are so many possibilities, you can create them for all the seasons and holidays. They are also a great gift idea!
