How to Sublimate Glass Cutting Boards
What You’ll Need:
Before we get started, make sure you have the following supplies:
- Glass Cutting Boards: These come pre-coated for sublimation, which means they’re ready to go straight out of the box. For this tutorial, I’m using a set of four glass cutting boards.
- Sublimation Paper: I used 8 ½ x 14 inch sublimation paper. Make sure your paper is sized correctly to fit your cutting board design.
- Heat-Resistant Tape: This will secure your sublimation design to the cutting board and keep it in place during pressing.
- Butcher Paper: Used to protect your heat press from any ink bleed-through.
- Cricut Auto Press: You can use any heat press, but I’m using my Cricut Auto Press set at 356°F for 180 seconds.
- Sublimation Printer: Make sure it’s loaded with sublimation ink. I printed my designs using a combination of Canva and Creative Fabrica images.
- Scissors: For trimming your designs.
- Heat-Resistant Gloves: This is essential when handling hot glass.
- Adhesive Rubber Feet: These are usually included with your sublimation glass cutting board set and help to protect countertops and elevate the cutting board.
I created a video to walk you through the process on How to Sublimate Glass Cutting Boards, check it out below:
Step 1: Design Your Sublimation Prints
For this project, I created designs using Canva and Creative Fabrica. You can use any design software you’re comfortable with. Make sure your designs are the same size as your cutting boards. Keep in mind that since we’re sublimating on glass, there’s no need to mirror your design. The image will show through the glass from the back, so it’ll appear correctly when viewed from the top.
Tip: If you’re using vibrant colors, they will really pop against the glass surface, so don’t be afraid to use bold shades and patterns.
Step 2: Print and Prepare Your Designs
Once your designs are ready, print them onto sublimation paper using a sublimation printer. If you don’t have a sublimation printer, you can convert an Epson EcoTank or use a ready-made Epson F170. Ensure your print settings are set to high quality to achieve the best color results.
After printing, trim any excess paper from your designs, leaving enough room to tape them securely to the cutting board. The cleaner your edges, the better your final result will look.
Step 3: Position and Secure Your Design
Place your print facing up a flat surface. With the sublimation coated surface facing down, center your design over the sublimation print. It’s crucial to make sure the design is aligned correctly, as any misalignment will show on your final product.
Once aligned, use heat-resistant tape to secure the sublimation paper to the cutting board. Make sure to tape all sides to prevent any movement during pressing.
Tip: Don’t tape too tightly. You want the paper to lie flat against the cutting board without stretching.
Step 4: Set Up Your Heat Press
Preheat your heat press to 356°F (180°C). For this tutorial, I’m using my Cricut Auto Press, but you can use any heat press that reaches the required temperature.
Place a sheet of butcher paper on the bottom platen of the press to protect it from any potential ink bleed. Lay your glass cutting board face down on the butcher paper. The sublimation paper should be on top of the cutting board, with the heat-resistant tape side facing up.
Step 5: Press Your Cutting Board
Once your cutting board is in position, place another piece of butcher paper on top to protect the heat plate from ink. Close the heat press and set it to press at 356°F for 180 seconds. The heat will draw the sublimation ink from the paper into the coating on the glass, creating a vibrant and permanent image.
Step 6: Remove and Cool
After the timer goes off, carefully open the heat press and remove the glass cutting board using heat-resistant gloves. The board will be extremely hot, so be cautious during this step.
Some people suggest letting the cutting board cool completely before removing the heat-resistant tape and sublimation paper. I prefer to take them off as soon as possible.
Step 7: Peel and Reveal
Gently remove the heat-resistant tape and peel back the sublimation paper to reveal your design. You’ll notice that the image is vibrant and clear, visible through the top of the cutting board.
Step 8: Final Touches
Flip the cutting board over to the back side, which is where your sublimation print now resides. The top side, which will be used for cutting, remains clear and smooth. This ensures that the design stays protected even during use.
Now, take the small adhesive rubber feet that came with your cutting board set and stick them to each corner of the cutting board. These rubber feet elevate the cutting board slightly, protecting your countertops and providing stability.
Step 9: Care and Maintenance
Sublimated glass cutting boards should be hand-washed to preserve the vibrancy of the design. Avoid placing them in the dishwasher, as the high heat and steam can cause the sublimation to fade over time. When washing, use a soft sponge and mild dish soap to gently clean the surface.
Sublimating on glass cutting boards is a fantastic way to create custom, one-of-a-kind kitchen accessories that showcase your personal style or serve as memorable gifts for others. With the right supplies and a little patience, you can produce stunning results that will last for years.
These sublimated cutting boards are perfect for weddings, housewarmings, or holiday gifts. Experiment with different designs and colors to see what works best for you.
