Easy DIY Halloween Costume Shirt Ideas
I created both of these shirts for my son and were created for personal use only. I don’t recommend you create these for sale since they are based on licensed characters. But if you want to whip up a quick costume with your Cricut, let me show you how I did it for inspiration!
Clark Kent Inspired Costume Idea
With the news of Henry Caville coming back as Superman, this Clark Kent costume is sure to be popular this Halloween! My oldest son didn’t want to spend a lot of money on his costume so I whipped up a Superman Inspired shirt for him to wear with his dress clothes. I love how it turned out.
What you will need:
- Cricut Explore 3 or Maker 3 (You can also use your Silhouette machine if you have one)
- Blue T-Shirt
- Red Iron On Vinyl
- Yellow Iron On Vinyl
- Black Iron On Vinyl
- Superman-Inspired Logo (Etsy is a good place to find a Superman-Inspired SVG)
- Suspenders
- Dress Shirt
- Dress Pants
- Heat Press (I used my Cricut AutoPress)
To start you will need to upload the Superman Inspired logo (from Etsy) into Cricut Design Space. Once you have your graphics loaded in Cricut Design Space, resize them to fit your shirt. Cut the design with your cutting machine. Iron them on in layers on your shirt.
I created a quick video showing you the process below…

Mario-Inspired Shirt Idea
With the new Mario movie coming out soon and the new Super Nintendo World coming to Universal Studios Hollywood, this Mario-inspired shirt is sure to be a hit! My youngest loves Mario and bought himself a Mario hat the last time we were at Universal Studios Hollywood, so of course, he wanted a shirt to match!
What you will need:
- Cricut Explore 3 or Maker 3 (You can also use your Silhouette machine if you have one)
- Red T-Shirt
- Blue Iron On Vinyl
- Yellow Iron On Vinyl
- White Iron On Vinyl
- Mario Inspired Logo (Etsy is a good place to find a Mario Inspired SVG)
- Suspenders and Button Design
- Mario Hat
- Heat Press (I used my Cricut AutoPress)
To start you will need to upload the Suspenders image and the Mario Inspired logo (from Etsy) into Cricut Design Space. You can also make your own Mario-inspired logo within Cricut Design Space by using the splice tool and the shape tool. Simply find a similar font and splice the M into a Circle. Once you have your graphics loaded in Cricut Design Space, resize them to fit your shirt.
Cut the designs with your cutting machine. The suspenders will be cut on Blue HTV and the logo will be cut on White HTV. The buttons will be cut on Yellow HTV.
For the overalls part of the shirt, I simply cut by hand a large rectangle and ironed it under the suspenders. For the Buttons, I layered the small circles on top of the suspenders.
I created a quick video showing you the process below…
@michellespartyplanit Need a simple costume idea? This DIY Mario shirt is super easy to make! My son already had the hat so I grabbed a $3 shirt from Joanne and used up some scrap HTV for the shirt design. #FlexEveryAngle #cricutmade #autopress #cricut #costumeidea #halloweencostume #howto #tutorial #easycostume #crafttok #lastminutecostumeidea #halloweenshirt #mariobros #supermario ♬ Super Mario Bros Main Theme – Geek Music
I hope these two ideas inspire you to whip up a quick DIY Halloween Costume Shirt. Both use some of the same colors of vinyl, so you can make them both! Michaels often has a great price on t-shirts, so grab a few when you can!
