Do you have a Harry Potter fan at home? Are you planning a Harry Potter themed birthday soon? If you’ve been following my blog, you’ll know that we recently celebrated my youngest son’s birthday with a big Harry Potter Birthday Party. We are big fans of the stories and movies, so of course we went all out with a celebration that included lots of DIYs. I’m excited to share how you can easily make Magic Potion Bottles for this week’s Whip It Up Wednesday!

DIY Harry Potter Potion Bottles
I was running out of time and had decided I wasn’t going to make any more props for our party. Until of course, my son asked if he was going to have any potion bottles to go with his Professor Snape costume. Literally, the night before. Fortunately, I had just finished making all the Hogwarts Scarves for the kids, so I had a few minutes to throw something together.
Luckily, all I had to do was a quick google search and I landed on the awesome post by Over the Big Moon. She had Free printable labels! I usually create my own stationery, but I was in a pinch. I quickly got started and printed and cut the smallest labels to fit on my craft bottles from Oriental Trading Company.
Supplies:
- Craft Bottles
- Mod Podge
- Paint Brush
- Scissors
- Twine
- Hole Punch
- Free Harry Potter Potion Labels from Over the Big Moon (She also has a great tutorial for distressing glass, so be sure to check it out!)
- Water
- Food Coloring
Step 1:
Gather your supplies and print out the potion labels.
Step 2:
Cut as many labels you want.
Step 3:
Fill the bottles with water and a few drops of food coloring. Shake well. It’s best to do fill the bottles with water before applying the labels, you won’t want to get them wet later. ( You can have the kids add the food coloring later as part of a Potions Class party activity!)
Step 4:
Apply a generous amount of Mod Podge to the back of the label and apply it to the bottle. Once it dries a little, apply a generous amount over the label. I actually elected to cover some of the bottles entirely with Mod Podge, to give them an opaque look.
Step 5:
The bottles have designs on them and some of them are textured entirely. So for those potion bottles and for the larger labels, I hole punched the labels and attached them to the bottles with twine.
And that’s it! Just let dry and you’re all set for Potions Class!
